Urban
by Akos Major
I first became interested in architecture on a trip to New York when I was twelve. Walking round Manhattan looking at all the buildings really inspired me. I saw that if you had the ability to design a building you can have a major impact on thousands of people who see your work every day. I particularly liked Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum. I liked the way that it was as much a piece of sculpture as it was a building. Recently I have become interested in green design and building to make less of a detrimental impact on the environmental world. For one of my essays at college I wrote about Enric Ruiz-Geli’s Media-TIC building in Barcelona. I have been inspired greatly by the innovations in technology used by Ruiz-Geli ,especially how the facades of the building were designed to perform as a way to trap the suns thermal energy and UV rays to save energy and also heat the building itself. I believe there is still a lot of room for more innovation in the environmentally sound area of design and architecture.
During my time at college I have enjoyed developing my design sketching as well as my life drawing skills. Another area I feel I have exceled is in my use of CAD both 2D and 3D. I am comfortable using Photoshop, Autodesk Inventor and Google Sketch Up. I also have experience using Adobe Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Flash. In my first year at college I was one of only two students selected to complete a Google Sketch Up model of a new hospice being built by ‘The Forget Me Not Trust’.
Outside of college I enjoy cycling, I do this not only for the exercise but also I like to try and stay away from using cars and busses because of their environmental impact. I also like to go for walks in countryside around where I live. I find both of these give me time to reflect on my work at college and give me chance to refresh my mind from constantly concentrating on work. I enjoy drawing places nearby where I live as there are a lot of open landscapes. In April 2011 I went to Paris, during my time there I filled a sketch book with drawings and photos of the city. I also have jobs as a kitchen assistant at two local restaurants. I feel this has developed my team working skills a lot as I have to get things done quickly and efficiently to keep the kitchen working smoothly. Every year I work at the Huddersfield Food and Drink festival as a site assistant. This has improved my communication and problem solving skills. I also like meeting new people whether at work, college or just within my friend group.
I enjoy work that is challenging as I like being pushed to have better results than I previously achieved. I like to discuss ideas with friends and colleagues as this will often help me to see new opportunities or different ways on looking at things ensuring I am not narrow minded in my thinking.
